19 08 2014

during a marathon visit to the lake district, i recorded in many locations, sometimes exploring several churches and chapels in one day. here are some of my favourite sites.

sounding out returns to scotland

19 08 2014

it was a pleasure to revisit some of the locations where i played before. one of the highlights is certainly the magnificent smoo cave. this time i returned with the alto saxophone. of course, this made quite a difference.
once again, i was amazed by the feel of the place, as much as by the sound. although i moved around searching for echoes and movements created by the complex architecture of the cave, my favourite place was standing in the little stream that crosses in the middle of the main chamber. in this position, i really sensed the inspiration calming my playing down and i was nearly forced to play the quietest and gentle melodies. this is surprising for a cave beaten by the wild elements of the north of scotland. and yet, the urge was overwhelming, as if instructed by eric satie to play ‘du bout de la pensée’ – hardly voicing the notes, the sound on the verge of breaking.

another location was a lucky find and quite a surprise. a small chapel on applecross proved to give much inspiration and a wonderful acoustic. a proof that size does not matter…
i placed the recorder on a table in the middle of the bare and simple room.
on it, i found a piece of paper with a quote. i read the lines out loud. this was my score.

in each location, i recorded over two days. i edited the recordings and produced an album for each place, which i hope to release soon.

sounding out in wales 2013

22 11 2013

Sounding Out is a project exploring outdoor and natural acoustics, architecture and sacred sites. these recordings are documents of in situ improvisations, inspired by the spirit and the special characteristics of a location.

on a trip round wales, a few musical stops offered a nice break from serious hiking. from holywell to llanwrst and betwsycoed, anglesea and north herefordshire… the trend of this series is certainly intimate and remote places, and yet the acoustic qualities are nonetheless wonderful. here are a few moments of inspiration i captured…

all the tracks below are also available here:

sounding out north yorkshire 2013

10 10 2013

this summer, i return to two places which have a particular attraction and a very strong character. i am very pleased to have this opportunity to visit a region i really like, and playing there is always a great pleasure.

the acoustics in both places are very different. the energy too. and as a result, my playing changes accordingly. i seem to remember the same feeling from previous visits. i was struck both times by lady chapel. at first, the sound is very unpretentious. it does not seem great as the place is fairly small. but instead, the room is very responsive and colourful. and the quality is very sweet. moreover, each time i played was very inspirational. unlike most churches, the vibe was more full on, devotional, nearly trance like.
